Ms. Rosa B. Williams

Ms. Rosa B. Williams, age 92, transitioned on February 12, 2026, in Gainesville, FL. Rosa B. Williams was born in 1933 and became a foundational civil rights leader in Gainesville and Alachua County. In the 1950's, she became the first Black resident in Gainesville to obtain a public library card, breaking barriers at a time when segregation restricted access to basic community services. She served the community in many capacities, including serving as the first Vice President of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Chapter, where she worked to expand voting rights, challenge discrimination, and strengthen civic engagement across generations. Rosa was a tireless advocate for children and families. She championed affordable day care, worked on juvenile justice issues, and supported community-based solutions long before they were widely embraced. In 1988, she co-founded the Black on Black Crime Task Force with the late Gainesville Police Chief, Waylon Clifton, an initiative dedicated to reducing youth violence and promoting community safety. In 1987, Rosa co-founded the Reichert House Youth Academy, a program that supports at-risk boys through mentorship, education, and life skills development. Her advocacy continued through the final weeks of her life through food drives and service initiatives in the Pine Ridge Community Center, which she opened in early 2015. For decades, she served on key Boards and Committees, lifting up families, advocating for justice, and building institutions that sustained Black communities in North Central Florida. Ms. Rosa's life reflected her philosophy of service without expecting any return. Her legacy continues in the lives she touched and the doors she opened for all who follow her path. A Memorial Service for Ms. Williams will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Abraham Lincoln Middle School Auditorium, 1001 SE 12th Street, Gainesville, FL 32641. Family and friends are asked to meet at The Rosa B. Williams Center, 524 NW 1st Street, Gainesville, FL 32601 on Saturday at 10:15 AM to form the Cortege. A Repast will be held at "The Hall of Heroes" at the Gainesville Police Department, 721 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL 32601 from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM also on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Black on Black Crime Task Force for the Pine Ridge Community Center and Baxter Place.
